In the past several years, CBD edibles – especially those adorable little CBD gummy bears – have become increasingly popular across the United States. Passage of the 2018 Farm Act opened the door for expanded hemp production and research and removed CBD oil from “Schedule One” status. Studies continue to suggest a variety of health benefits to CBD use, including pain management and stress reduction. In the end, though, it’s the personal stories of thousands of people who’ve experienced those benefits which are truly driving this exponential rise in curiosity and exploration.
So what exactly is CBD and what should you know if you’re considering it for the first time? Let’s start by defining a few terms.
What is CBD?
“CBD” is short for Cannabidiol. This is an ingredient in marijuana, but it’s not the part that causes a “high” for the user. It’s non-addictive and doesn’t create any known health hazards – that’s why it’s legal. The CBD used by most reputable companies is derived from hemp plants. Hemp is related to marijuana but contains minimal THC – the “psychotropic” ingredient behind the effects most folks associate with marijuana use. CBD offers many of the health benefits and stress relief of cannabis without the undesired results of THC.
“CBD Oil” is the rawest form of CBD. It can be added to other things (like edibles) or used as a tincture – a fancy way of saying it’s been concentrated for easy use. Tinctures are generally placed under the tongue. With this method, a single dose can last an entire day. On the other hand, taste can be an issue, which may be a factor when deciding what approach is right for you.
“CBD Edibles” are, of course, items containing CBD which you can eat. The varieties of CBD edibles are endless. There are chocolates, taffies, honey – even cake pops! Carl’s Jr. is experimenting with CBD hamburgers and Ben & Jerry’s wants to put it into ice cream. One of the main advantages of edibles is their convenience. Most of us eat every day (some of us are quite good at it), and many of the options are quite tasty. Less obviously, CBD edibles tends to produce more potent and faster-acting effects. The trade-off is that those effects fade slightly more quickly than with other methods. Whether this is an advantage or a disadvantaged depends on your personal goals.
The most popular CBD edibles by far are CBD Gummies, or “gummy bears.” Gummies are fun as well as tasty. They’re a favorite of folks looking to safely reduce anxiety or assist with pain management. As you seek out the most appealing or interesting CBD gummy bear options, look for the same things you would in any snack – natural ingredients, relatively low sugar, and clear information on the label. CBD gummies offer a good concentration of CBD oil for most users – but know what you’re chewing, even if it’s shaped like a bright purple bear.
As with any supplement, do your homework. Look for reputable dealers who willingly answer your questions and who are transparent about how their products are created and what they do to maintain the quality and purity of those products. Government oversight of CBD oil is still minimal. That’s great when it comes to freedom and access, but it puts the responsibility on you to pay attention to what you’re buying. There’s no reason for any form of CBD to contain synthetic ingredients or to use chemical solvents in the extraction process. There are too many legit sources to subject your body to bad chemistry!
Then have fun, and feel better. That’s what it’s all about!
